Tools of the trade - wide angle lens
Ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no river wide enough that I can’t shoot it with this lens! Actually that’s probably not true, but it’s a great song.
This is a Sony 10-18mm f4 with a UV filter (better to break a filter than a lens, you know). To be frank – it’s a bit of a toy! I firmly believe in good glass (see: my other lenses) but more importantly I believe in the right tool for the job. It’s not worth spending big on fancy gear when you’re not using it for anything fancy – and when skilful operation is more important overall.
A wide angle does what it says on the tin – captures a wide view of your scene. So its great for showing scope and scale in establishing shots. I particularly like using it for walkthroughs and tours. The lens is really light, so it works really well on my gimbal for smooth and stable shots, like in the above shot from a treatment plant tour.
It can be fun to get creative and lean into the stretch and distortion that the wide angle creates. It can be really dynamic to move up to, around, and away from your subject, like the shots above from a virtual reality promo.
It’s not the lens I use most often, and it’s not my best quality lens, but when I need it, it’s the only lens for the job.
