TOOLS OF THE TRADE - LAVELIER MICROPHONE

This is the Sennheiser AVX- MKE2 On Camera Lavalier Wireless Set.

Lav mics, also known as lapel mics or radio mics, are a commonly used tool as they are a subtle and convenient way to get a microphone nice and close to a speaker’s mouth and deliver excellent audio. Where possible, it’s nice to hide the mic underneath clothing, but it’s rare that seeing the microphone clipped to a collar or jacket is a big problem.

This set is a perfect example of spending a little bit of extra money in an area that is outside of your specialty – shout out to sound recordists and audio engineers! The standout feature here is that the microphone and receiver connect up automatically depending on the available radio spectrum – Sennheiser calls it Auto Frequency Management. I’m so happy to have a reliable radio mic system that I don’t have to think about too much!

And it has other great features – it’s a high-quality microphone which comes with useful accessories like clips and mic shields, with a compact size optimised for shooting on a DSLR like mine, where I can mount the receiver straight onto the camera. The batteries are rechargeable with a standard micro-USB, and they pretty much last all day, and you can get spares if you need.
And, very importantly, these days I don’t travel without disinfectant wipes to clean the microphone between talent! Safety first!
