Tools of the trade - coloured gels
Ever since I started working in television production, gels have been a go-to item in the kit. Here are just a couple of examples of how I’ve used gels recently for very different effects.
This shot was a piece to camera for an explainer, so the only thing that needed to shine was Tash. After keying her on the right and filling on the left, I put a purple gel behind Tash so that her hair would catch the colour. This post-produced version of the shot also has a slight vignette to really make Tash pop.
These shots were part of about a dozen back-to-back interviews at the 2019 Australian Dermatologists Conference. Because we were shooting in a conference room with no options for varying the shots or time to re-set, gels were the perfect option for changing the look between talent. By splashing the entire background with a bold colour, the shots had separation and dimension.
Heading out on the road with gels in my kit means I'll always be able to put a little something extra into my shots.
